Medical Disclaimer

This website provides general educational information only. It is not medical advice, and it does not create a clinician–patient relationship.

The content here describes altitude sickness in general terms for a general audience. It cannot account for your medical history, medications, pregnancy, age, or existing conditions. Nothing on this site should be used to diagnose yourself or anyone else, to decide against seeking care, or to delay seeking care.

Always consult a qualified healthcare professional about your own symptoms — particularly before travelling to high elevation with a heart, lung, or blood condition, during pregnancy, or if you have a history of altitude illness.

In an emergency

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you or anyone with you experiences shortness of breath at rest, confusion or altered consciousness, difficulty walking straight, chest tightness, a cough producing frothy or pink sputum, blue or grey lips, or oxygen saturation persistently below 88–90%.

These can indicate high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) or high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE). Both are medical emergencies. Do not use this website to decide whether to seek emergency care.

About the services described

Intravene provides mobile IV hydration therapy in the Denver metropolitan area. IV hydration treats dehydration and does not treat the reduced blood oxygen that causes altitude sickness, does not accelerate acclimatization, and is not a preventive treatment. It is an elective wellness service, generally not covered by insurance, and is not emergency medical care.

Any treatment decision is made by the attending licensed clinician at the time of a visit, based on their own assessment.
